Nigerian afrosoul singer, songwriter and musician Maka has unveiled the music video for “Chocolate Love” taken from her critically acclaimed project It’s Not You; It’s Me, which was released in November last year.
In her continued promotion of black art, the video highlights the beauty, energy and joy of being black using the metaphors and entendres associated with “chocolate”. In a time where black pain is amplified more than ever, the visuals hope to be a source of escapism and pride.
According to Maka, her inspiration for the “Chocolate Love” video sees her, “pushing the narrative of celebrating and promoting black love and excellence. It’s a message the world needs right now”.
Based in Lagos, Nigeria, Maka is known for her fluid fusion of genres like soul, hip hop, Jazz and rap. Her music influences dates back to her childhood days in the choir with her mom. Although she comes with a background in Law, Maka is now a full time musician, having shared stages with some of Nigeria’s best artists such as Bez, Simi, Mi Casa among others.
Before her latest project It’s Not You; It’s Me, she made her debut with the critically acclaimed The Truth EP in 2017, and several breakthrough singles in between.
