Nigerian American Musician Lachi Shares New Single ‘That Kinda Black’

Lachi has released a new single, “That Kinda Black” inviting listens to explore a different perspective on Blackness and identity.

In this track, Lachi blends thought provoking lyrics and intricate musical arrangements, delivering a deeply personal yet universally message. The song challenges stereotypes while celebrating cultural heritage, providing an insight into the complex realities of growing up as an immigrant child in America.

Lachi’s moment of frustration during an industry conference served as the inspiration for the track. She missed a significant chance after being warned that her “tone” wasn’t appropriate, and she was instantly reduced to the stereotype of the “Mad Black Woman.” Lachi chose to ignore the emotion and move on rather than face the matter directly.

Lachi later on entered the recording booth on an impulse and experienced an emotional release. As though the words had been waiting to be released. “That Kinda Black” became a representation of her experience with racial stigma and her wish to take back control of her story.

Lachi is a well known Nigerian American musician, singer, and activist. She has established a place for herself in music industry as a musician who combines jazz, rap, soul, and alternative music elements.

Beyond only being a talented musician, Lachi has established herself as a disability rights advocate, earning her the USA Woman of the Year award. In addition to providing entertainment, she raises awareness and supports inclusivity through her platform.

This song was the result of a skilled collaboration of musicians and artists. Lachi and Frank Nitty worked together, and the song gains depth from Nitty’s lyrical style. Lachi’s arrangement melds well with the contributions of award-winning performers on bass, cello, and bongos. The modest yet vast production, which is directed by Lachi, Caroline Mariko Stucky, and Arthur Gwynne, ties the piece together.

Lachi’s distinct voice and viewpoint offer an interesting and urgently needed account of Blackness that is  intimate. As Lachi continues to push boundaries and redefine what it means to be Black in America, her artistic and campaigning skills ensure that her message is heard widely.
