Orchestra Baobab, is a Senegalese band who are known for their rich fusion of African and Cuban sounds, has just released their latest single, “Boulène Dème.” The track, which combines funky electric guitar riffs with a mesmerising trumpet solo, is both a heartfelt musical tribute and a powerful social message aimed at the many Senegalese youths who risk their lives migrating to Europe.
In early September 2024, news broke that a fishing canoe had drifted off the coast of Dakar, carrying the lifeless bodies of young migrants. The tragic story touched the nation, with many Senegalese families feeling the weight of the loss.
Inspired by this heartbreaking event, members of Orchestra Baobab—recording in their Ngor studio overlooking the Atlantic Ocean—felt compelled to create a tribute. Led by Papino Koité, a young and dynamic singer, and his father Mountaga Koité, a founding member and drummer, the group began to compose “Boulène Dème.”
The song’s lyrics, enriched by the voices of Papino and Idrissa Diop, implore young people to reconsider the perilous journey across the ocean. In a mix of Wolof and French, the lyrics “Boulène Dème” meaning “don’t go” serve as a direct call, resonating with families who understand the pain of losing loved ones to such journeys.
Orchestra Baobab’s artistic history dates back to the 1970s, and they continue to be a defining presence in world music, celebrated for their unique fusion of African and Cuban musical styles. Over the years, their sound has evolved, incorporating influences from jazz, funk, and mbalax, a traditional Senegalese rhythms, while still staying true to their roots.
The track features a blend of guitar riffs that echo the vibrancy of West African funk and a trumpet solo that’s as captivating as it is emotive. True to Orchestra Baobab’s style, the song builds on their signature groove and brass themes, creating a soundscape that is at once grounded in tradition and layered with contemporary flair.
This latest release shows what Orchestra Baobab are good at, that being blending music, message, and emotion into a piece that is both impactful and beautiful.
