Even now, the Oscars race row makes its presence felt, the Evening Standard film Awards once again making a pointed mention of the controversy. The prizes of the ceremony, only eligible for British and Irish talent featured a short list more ethnically diverse than the Academy Awards.

Idris Elba took home the best actor award for his role as a rebel fighter in Cary Fukunga’s Beasts of No Nation – the same performance that has been overlooked by the Oscars. Host Simon Amstell reinforced the pointed reference to the controversy in his opening monologue, describing 2015 as “another great year for white men”.
