Rex & The Rhythm Shares Heartfelt New Single ‘Play My Guitar’

Barbados-born, Los Angeles-based artist Rex & The Rhythm (Rex) is back with a new single, “Play My Guitar.” The song explores the complexities of giving your all in a relationship only to feel unappreciated. With groovy electric guitar riffs right from the opening, the track immediately pulls you in, setting a soulful and engaging sound.

“This song is about giving your everything, but still being taken for granted in a relationship,” Rex shares. It’s a piece that is easy to dance to and really relatable due to the captivating contrast created by the live instrumentation and emotional depth.

Rex describes the sound as a mix of Songs About Jane-era Maroon 5 with the modern funk and soul vibes of Anderson .Paak. “I wanted the song to feel like a concert in a bottle—funky, soulful, and live, with a big hook,” he says.

The song “Play My Guitar” exemplifies Rex’s ability to combine infectious, feel-good beats with poignant narration, The song demonstrates Rex’s development as a songwriter and performer.

Rex grew up surrounded by music, spending time at the studios of international superstar Eddy Grant on his historic plantation in Barbados. He started playing drums at nine, later adding guitar and bass to his skillset.

By 15, Rex joined Cover Drive, a Caribbean pop band co-founded by his mother. The group saw major success in the UK with three top-ten hits, including the chart-topping “Twilight,” and opened for artists like Rihanna, Kelly Clarkson, and Lauryn Hill.

After stepping out as a solo artist, Rex released his debut EP, #127 Solace, in 2021, blending elements of his Caribbean roots with alternative R&B music genre.

His follow-up projects, including Secrets Behind Our Smiles and 2024’s Highs & Grows, show his growth as an artist, incorporating influences from 90s hip-hop legends and modern alt-pop sounds.
