San Francisco Avant Pop Artist Grooblen Shares New Single ‘Twiggy Molts’

Avant-pop artist Grooblen returns with their latest single, “Twiggy Molts,” a gentle, insistent meditation on solitude and detachment that showcases the musician’s ability to find inspiration in life’s more unusual corners.

The song was inspired by an event involving Ellie Stokes’ pet gecko, which lost an eye during a natural shedding cycle. Stokes, the songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist behind Grooblen, found parallels between the gecko’s situation and her own feelings of detachment from friends and family at the time.

“Twiggy Molts” is taken from Grooblen’s upcoming album, A Wormhole Is A Freeway To The Stars, and highlights the unconventional nature of Stokes’ compositions.

The single follows the release of “Gastropod,” a kaleidoscopic psych-infused rocker using a snail shell as a metaphor for depressive self-preservation, and “Escher Girl,” which critiques the caricatured and objectified portrayal of women in comics.

An accompanying visual for “Twiggy Molts,” created by Bay Area native Tori Leonhardt, was also released today. The flowing CGI syncs with Grooblen’s light piano arpeggios to create an immersive space for reflecting on the song’s message.

A Wormhole Is A Freeway To The Stars is set for release on June 23 and will be available on cassette (via Lavasocks) and on all digital streaming platforms. Cassette pre-orders are now live on the Lavasocks website.

Since its inception in 2020, Grooblen has evolved from a solo project featuring a rotating cast of supporting musicians to a dual-purpose endeavor, with Stokes in the studio and a trio on stage featuring Alejandro Lara-Agraz (bass) and Sean Aaron (drums).

Throughout its journey, Grooblen has explored various sounds and textures, from the lo-fi minimalist beats of “Confused Humans” (2020) to the searching balladry of “R.E.M. Dog” (2021), and the spacey alt-pop of “Escher Girl” (2022).
