All-around animation veteran Conrad Vernon has been announced as the Captain aboard MGM’s animated reboot of The Addams Family. As a director, his credits include Shrek 2, Monsters vs. Aliens, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, and the R-rated Sausage Party. I imagine this next project will be a little more child friendly.
Pamela Pettler – Corpse Bride, Monster House – has penned the screenplay based on cartoons revised by Matt Lieberman. Vernon produces alongside Gail Berman and Alex Schwartz.
The Addams Family has long been a favourite among both adults and children; the family began as a popular comic strip featured in the New Yorker, illustrated by cartoonist Charles Addams. Success led to a television show that ran between 1964 and 1966, as well as an animated series which aired in the early ’70s.
Two movies in the 1990s forced Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, and Christina Ricci to become synonymous with the franchise, which has again been revived by Broadway and the West End.
Development of another Addams Family adventure was announced back in 2013, though rumours started years before of an adaptation under Tim Burton. Who will voice the characters in the reboot remains a mystery as of now, and with the passing of Raul Julia, there’s doubt to whether the film’s stars will want to make a return. News looms.
