Garbage singer Shirley Manson has called Kanye West “small and petty and spoilt” following his criticism of Beck winning album of the year over Beyonce at the recent Grammy Awards. Manson posted a letter on Facebook in which she addressed Kanye West’s comment about Beck’s win being “disrespectful to inspiration” saying, “in attempting to reduce the importance of one great talent over another, you make a mockery of all musicians and music from every genre, including your own”.
Manson also labelled Beck as “accomplished” and “humble” in comparison to West looking like “a complete twat”. Despite up-roar over Kanye’s bold stage invasion at the Grammys, the ever humble Beck commented on the incident in a forgiving manner: “I was just so excited he was coming up. [West] deserves to be onstage as much as anybody. How many great records has he put out in the last five years, right?”.
To many however, Kanye’s comments seem to distinguish music as a competition shadowed by a narrow-minded interpretation rather than as something to be appreciated from all different angles. Read Manson’s full letter here.
