Off the blocks already with the release of “Qhawe“, South African MC Toya Delazy double downs on her bold start to 2020 with her new single “Find Di Boy”.
While moving with a rich House essence and emboldened by African rhythms, “Find Di Boy” presents as a sensual mid-tempo serenade. Toya finds a sweet spot with this release as she mixes her knack for lyrics with a refined ear for melody, all dedicated to her lover.
Sharing her sentiments on the single, Toya said: “This song is about love being non-binary and the expectations society places on us as opposed to reality – without these things we would be closer to a peaceful world. We can’t march together for equality and then still be discriminated against when we are being authentic. These are the things that hold us all back.”
Dubbed as one to watch, with plenty of tastemaker support including RED BULL MUSIC, EARMILK, CLASH, LONDON IN STEREO, BET AWARDS, Toya continues to carve out her own sonic lane. And if her last releases are anything to go off, she most certainly is excelling.
Last year saw her release “Funani” being voted by 4:3 BOILER ROOM as the ‘Best Video of 2019’ and this year already looks promising as her recent high octane single “Qhawe” has already amassed over 100k plays on Spotify alone since dropping in March.
As Toya looks ahead towards her live DJ set on July 3rd for UK Black Pride and a headline slot at El Dorado Festival with Shy FX, Groove Armada, Kojey Radical in 2021, there’s a strong sense that this next chapter for Toya Delazy will be one where she totally dominates.
