British screenwriter Jack Thorne has been tapped in to take over writing duties on Star Wars: Episode IX from director Colin Trevorrow and partner Derek Connolly. Reportedly, Thorne brings a fresh set of eyes to a script that needs to somewhat be rewritten.
Thorne has an extensive career in TV writing, now toeing into Hollywood with the likes of upcoming Julia Roberts–Jacob Tremblay movie Wonder. His credits include Skins, This is England series, and A Long Way Down.
Thorne isn’t the first ‘replacement’ in the Star Wars universe, per se. Ex-directors of the upcoming Han Solo film Phil Lord and Christoper Miller were replaced by Ron Howard after proving difficult on set.
Episode IX, the final installment of the franchise, is expected to begin production in January 2018 for a May 24, 2019 release. A title is yet to be release, but if you’re really itching for your next dose of Star Wars, Episode VIII: The Last Jedi will open December 15 this year.
