NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton has rocketed to the top of the US box office with a stellar $56 million opening weekend – far outperforming the predicted outcome of $40 million. This has helped distributer Universal Pictures become the fastest studio ever to make $2 billion at the US box office alone in a calendar year; the previous record was set by Warner Bros. on Christmas day 2009.
Here, it has been broken effortlessly after a year of blockbuster hits for the studio, including Fast and Furious 7, Jurassic World, Minions and Fifty Shades of Grey. Of course, not all movies could be winners – and director Guy Ritchie‘s The Man from U.N.C.L.E has under-performed, charting at #3 with a $13 million weekend (on 900 more screens than the box office number one), with the spy saga also being outperformed by Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation in second place in its third week of release.
