For the second week running, NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton is number one in the US box office, with a $26.8 million weekend that brings its total to a stunning $111 million in the US alone. The film starts opening internationally this coming weekend, with it hitting UK cinemas on Friday. Elsewhere in the chart, the new releases all disappointed; Sinister 2 opened in third place, behind Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, with a paltry $10.6 million – $8 million less than expected and $8 million less than the opening weekend of the 2012 original.
In the “pointless sequels nobody wanted” section of the chart, Hitman: Agent 47 suffered a fatal blow with an $8 million fourth place opening, whilst the Jesse Eisenberg/Kristen Stewart comedy American Ultra fared even worse with a limp $5.6 million for sixth place. Next weekend suggests the box office may get worse, with the traditional end of August “dumping ground” for films, studios have no idea what to do with; expect box office flops to come in the shape of Owen Wilson action thriller No Escape and Zac Efron‘s DJ drama We Are Your Friends next week.
