After stepping back from writing duties for Rocky spin-off Creed, original creator Sylvester Stallone will pen its sequel Creed 2.
The news puts into context Stallone’s Instagram posts hinting at a possible return for Ivan Drago, the Soviet machine from Rocky IV. Last month, frequent stills were shared of the set showing Drago, even alongside Carl Weathers‘ Apollo Creed. The father of Creed’s lead Adonis, perhaps a Drago descendant is set to enter the ring with Michael B. Jordan‘s character. It’s the caption that hints the most at a reunion. “Maybe it’s time to try to again?”
Stallone is said to have been “fully focused on” the script, and production is hoped to begin sometime next year with MGM. It’s a turnaround from last year, where it seemed Stallone wouldn’t be involved in a then only speculative sequel. He decided that the ending with Adonis summarised the franchise well and didn’t want to push the story too much.
It is unsure what role Creed director and co-writer Ryan Coogler will play, particularly when he’s busy with Black Panther set for a 2018 release. Coogler was said to have some ideas of how to continue the story, however, so some credit is likely.
We’ll have to continue to listen out for full details on the sequel.
