Though certainly a controversial style, bucket hats have made their way back into popularity within fashion. As the 90’s revival continues to dominate the high street this summer, it comes as no surprise that the bucket hat should be decreed cool again.
Did you check out the catwalk in this last month? Well if you didn’t, this “it” item appeared in every single fashion show. Starting with Dior, this fashion brand is at the forefront of the trend, especially for hats. For autumn/winter 2019 Maria Grazia Chiuri sent every single model down the runway wearing a bucket hat – redefining the casual nineties accessory into a chic piece of high end headwear.
But this item isn’t originally a 90’s hat. It first appeared in Gilligan’s Island, the 1960s sitcom with the clumsy titular fictional character iconically remembered for his tomato red sweater and white floppy bucket hat.
Then the trend returned again in the 80’s with LL Cool J wearing the hat alongside gold chains and Adidas tracksuits. When the 90s came around, the bucket hat became synonymous with the Britpop music scene, worn by the Gallagher brothers who loved a Kangol style.
And now the bucket hat trend is once again with us, worn by celebrities such as Gigi and Bella Hadid, populating the Instagram with this trend, as a result. It’s also sported by big stars like Rihanna, who’s the queen of the bucket hat.

You don’t need to have 90’s kid style to want to jump on this trend. You can put an ethereal, sophisticated spin on it or pull it off in a streetwear-chic way. The fact is that a bucket hat works no matter what your personal style may be. Check out some inspirational outfits here below and choose your favourite style.
