It’s no Oscar-worthy movie, and it’s not another of Patrick Stewart‘s masterpieces, but apparently The Emoji Movie isn’t a complete disaster either. The film, projected by some critics to be a disaster, has managed a $25 million box office opening over the weekend and is expected to continue a fairly solid run.
The film didn’t quite manage to nab the top spot, as Christopher Nolan‘s polar opposite Dunkirk maintained its hold as number one. They were pretty close early in the week but Dunkirk leapt ahead with $28.1 million by Sunday morning, in front of The Emoji Movie’s $25.6 million.
Its relative success at box office is not reciprocated by critics, who have branded the film unoriginal, uninspired, and a second-rate Inside Out. It brandished a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes upon its opening, though that’s crawled up to a still measly 8%. Dunkirk sits at 93%.
I guess the kids still want to see animated films, and somehow, The Emoji Movie seems to be appealing to them; and few others. If you want to judge it for yourself, head to a theatre.
