A live-action version of The Little Mermaid will be swimming to theatres sometime this year and the film’s promotional YouTube channel uploaded the trailer earlier!
Before your eyes bug right out of your head in shock and confusion, no, this Little Mermaid isn’t affiliated with Disney. It takes the original Hans Christian Andersen tale and switches things up completely with a circus setting in the Deep South.
Headlining the movie are William Moseley, and fresh, new face, Loreto Peralta, who play the brother and sister who follow the rumours of a real-life mermaid, played by Poppy Drayton, to a circus in the film.
Blake Harris and Chris Bouchard share the directorial responsibility, with the screenplay Harris’ work. Production is handled by Armando Gutierrez and Robert Molloy, with Jessica Steinbrenner suited up as executive producer.
For those disappointed that this isn’t a work from Disney, hold your horses! Disney is, in fact, coming out with a remake of The Little Mermaid eventually. Their version is still in the early development stages, but have recently confirmed Moana songwriter, Lin-Manuel Miranda, will be teaming up with the original film’s composer, Alan Menken, to pen some new music!
A specific release date has not been set for either Little Mermaid remake, but this one should premiere sometime this summer!
