The Martian was one of the biggest hits of the Summer. Best on the best-selling novel by Andy Weir, directed by cinematic legend Ridley Scott and featuring a cast of Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Daniels and many many others, it was always going to be. With the storyline involving Matt Damon’s astronaut stranded on Mars for roughly 6 years, you would be forgiven for thinking it would be a sombre affair. You would be wrong. According to the Hollywood Foreign Press anyway.
The Martian has been selected in the Best Comedy category alongside other films such as Spy and Trainwreck, which are undoubtedly comedies. The Martian however is a surprisingly funny film, With the trailers and premise selling it very much as a serious picture, the disco soundtrack, clever casting of comedic pros and youngsters, in Wiig, Daniels and Donald Glover, the film does roll along with laughs all along the way. This isn’t the first time the Globes have pushed the definition of comedy, selecting films such as The Wolf of Wall Street and Birdman, in the same category, all funny films but comedies?!
The Globes will be held on January 10 with Ricky Gervais hosting again, which no matter how you cut it, is definitely comedy.
