The Singer and The Songwriter Explore Grief And Friendship ON New Album ‘Dreams! The Dead! Ghost! Future’

Oakland-based modern folk duo, The Singer and The Songwriter, comprised of Rachel Garcia and Thu Tran, have just released their highly anticipated third full-length album, Dreams! The Dead! Ghost! Future.

This deeply personal project marks the duo’s continued exploration of poignant themes like grief, love, loss, and societal challenges. After a decade of development, this collection of songs reflects their unique artistic journey, weaving stories rooted in their experiences as a queer, mixed-race duo navigating complex emotional and political landscapes.

The album draws inspiration from an abandoned storefront sign in McDermott, NV, that inspired its evocative title, symbolizing the lyrical themes of the record: heartbreak, fleeting dreams, and hope amid societal turmoil.

Tracks such as the lead single “Sound & Light”, written nearly a decade ago, address the emotional turbulence of loss and grief, while “The Work” speaks powerfully to the struggles of the working class, offering a modern-day labor anthem.

The track “Over Easy”, on the other hand, reflects on ambiguous grief, forgiveness, and fractured familial relationships. Recorded at New Monkey Studio using a vintage 1970’s Trident Triad A-Range console, the album has a warm, timeless quality that complements the duo’s intricate storytelling.

The Singer and The Songwriter have spent 18 years crafting their sound, merging elements of folk, Americana, and acoustic storytelling with their unique identities and perspectives. The intimacy of their music, combined with their thoughtful lyrics, creates an experience that is as emotionally resonant as it is musically rich.

Fans can expect a deeply introspective listening experience, as each song on the album reflects on life’s challenges, love, and finding humanity amidst societal and personal struggles.
