Matt Storm, the Vancouver-based alt-soul artist, has officially released the final single “You Say This I Say That” that completes his highly anticipated four-track EP, Spilt, which dropped on November 22, 2024.
Mixed by the Grammy Award-winning Ben Kane (D’Angelo, Emily King), This song combines psych rock and alt R&B elements to produce a sound that is distinctively Matt Storm but also reminiscent of Frank Ocean and Radiohead.
With the release of Spilt, Matt marks the beginning of a new chapter in his musical journey. For this EP, Storm collaborated with two of Vancouver’s finest musicians—Trent Otter on drums and Luke Deville on bass. The result is an organic, “live off the floor” feel, stretching the limits of contemporary alt-R&B and psych rock while taking inspiration from jazz and old soul.
As Spilt’s last song, “You Say This I Say That” flawlessly captures the main idea of the EP. “It’s a song that I don’t even feel like I wrote,” Matt reflects. “I hunched over the piano, and the words kinda came into existence on their own—they just spilt out.”
The song begins with a simple yet powerful combination of piano and vocals, gradually evolving into lush harmonies. The track then transitions into a trippy instrumental breakdown, before a powerful drum and bass drop giving thew piece a different feel to it.
Since his debut, Matt has steadily built a following, playing extensive shows in Vancouver and other locations. In 2022, Storm performed at Victoria’s Rifflandia Festival, and his Spotify catalog now boasts over 200,000 monthly listeners. In 2023, he took his music on the road, performing across Europe and Canada, including shows in the UK and Slovakia, and reaching new international audiences.
His journey began in childhood when he discovered new albums and immersed himself in their sounds. “Two Princes” by Spin Doctors was the first song that truly captivated him. From there, he began his musical exploration in earnest, teaching himself guitar and writing songs from the age of 13.
Music quickly became a refuge for Matt, especially during his childhood years spent moving between countries—Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Kenya, and eventually settling in Vernon, B.C., Canada, at age 17.
Matt Storm has produced a distinctive and intimate piece of work that combines both psych rock and alt-R&B elements. The EP’s final track, “You Say This I Say That,” flawlessly captures Storm’s ability to communicate vulnerability via song in a way that is both authentic and somewhat new.
