Sales of Vinyl have surpassed one million sales for the first time since 1997, with the US alone seeing a rise of 49% in sales each year, however Neil Young has recently spoken out about the recent revival, stating that it’s “nothing but a fashion statement“. In a recent interview he stated that, “it’s a great niche and it’s a wonderful thing and I hope people continue to enjoy vinyl and it continues to grow because it’s a good thing”.
He then went on to add, “this is a convenience-oriented society and vinyl is not a convenient thing… A lot of people that buy vinyl today don’t realize that they’re listening to CD masters on vinyl and that’s because the record companies have figured out that people want vinyl, and they’re only making CD masters in digital, so all the new products that come out on vinyl are actually CDs on vinyl, which is really nothing but a fashion statement”. Coincidentally, Young has recently brought out a digital player, Pono, which offers high quality audio and stores up to 2000 songs.
