Just a few days after filming officially wrapped, the first trailer for Doctor Strange has arrived to give us a glimpse at the origin story of one of the mightiest superheroes from the Marvel universe.
The story goes as follows, after a gruesome car accident, which ends his career, the brilliant and arrogant surgeon Stephen Strange (Cumberbatch) embarks on a journey to cure his wounds. His path leads him to the powerful mystic and healer, the Ancient One (Swinton), who takes him as an apprentice to verse him into the intricacies of the mystical, picking up some martial arts along the way. His new skills will be tested as he must face off against a threat in the face of a sorcerer (Mikkelsen) gone rogue and prove himself as the Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme.
The footage reflects Marvel’s first attempt to delve into the more mystical canon of the Marvel universe. It seems to set a more serious tone, while the astonishing cinematography and reality bending sequences are highly reminiscent of Christopher Nolan‘s Inception. The focus in the trailer is, undeniably, Doctor Strange’s budding abilities, where the final shot shows our protagonist donning the infamous Cloak of Levitation.
Alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton and Mads Mikkelsen, we also see cameos of some of the other key players, including Chiwetel Ejiofor as a fellow sorcerer and would-be rival, as well as Rachel McAdams as a nurse and Strange’s link to humanity.
You can see see how Benedict Cumberbatch immerses himself in his new superhero role in the trailer down below. Doctor Strange will be released in the UK on October 28th, 2016 in glorious 3D.
