The Gaon Chart Music Awards is a major South Korean music awards show and it’s back for it’s sixth year!
The event, held by the country’s national music record chart, Gaon Chart, took place earlier at the Jamsil Arena. Super Junior’s Leeteuk and Mamamoo’s Solar hosted the event.
Finalists are chosen based on data from the previous year’s Gaon year-end sales chart. In addition to awarding artists and their music, the Gaon Chart Music Awards also recognizes the work of stylists, choreographers, producers, composers and other industry professionals.
Winners of the monthly Song / Artist of the Year awards were GFRIEND, MAMAMOO, Jang Bum-joon, TWICE, Urban Zakapa, SISTAR, Wonder Girls, BLACKPINK, Lim Chang-jung and BIGBANG.
The prestigious Album of the Year awards went to GOT7 for the performance of their album, Flight Log: Turbulence, during the first quarter of the year, EXO’s EX’ACT for the second and third quarters of the year and BTS for Wings in the fourth quarter.
NCT127 and BLACKPINK received New Artist of the Year awards, Performers of the Year went to Lee Tae-yoon and Kang Sung-ho, and Hottest Performance of the Year awards were given to Seventeen and Infinite.
Special mentions went to hip-hop artist, BewhY; indie duo, Bolbbalgan4; singer, Han Dong-geun; and R&B artist, Dean.
Different popularity awards were given to SHINee, EXO and EXO’s Sehun and BTS.
Lyricist of the Year was Jo Yoon-kyung, who wrote Taeyeon’s “Why”, EXO’s “Call Me Baby”, EXO-CBX’s “Hey Mama!”, and NCT127’s “Once Again”.
Composer of the Year went to Black Eyed Pilseung, who composed TWICE’s hit songs “TT” and “Cheer Up” and Sistar’s “I Like That” and “Touch My Body”.
Big Hit Entertainment’s Bang Si-hyuk won Producer of the Year and Choreography / Stylist awards went to BTS choreographer, Son Sung-deuk, and TWICE’s stylist, Choi Hee-sun.
Maroon 5 won an honourable mention as International Song of the Year for their song Don’t Wanna Know.
