Antoine Fuqua Developing A Fred Hampton Movie | Film News

Antoine Fuqua is adding a biopic to his first-look deal with Sony. The movie will be based on Jeffrey Haas’ book The Assassination of Fred Hampton: How the FBI and the Chicago Police Murdered a Black Panther and like the title of the book suggests, the subject of the film will be none other than Black Panther leader Fred Hampton.

As detailed in the book, Hampton was killed in 1969 in his sleep during a raid by the state tactical unit, the Chicago Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. His death had been ruled a justifiable homicide by inquest and the civil lawsuit that followed resulted in a settlement of $1.85 million in 1982.

The biopic, currently untitled and in its early development stages, will be a passion project for Fuqua. Another film in Fuqua’s deal with Sony is The Equalizer 2, which marks the first sequel in Fuqua and Denzel Washington’s careers. The Equalizer 2 will open in theatres September 14, 2018.
