American five-piece girl band 1 Girl Nation, now 1GN, debuted in the mainstream back in 2013 with “While We’re Young”, and are finally back. The girls have a contemporary Christian sound, but with this comeback they have whittled down to a trio, formed by Lauryn Taylor Bach, Carmen Justice and Kayli Robinson.
“Get Hype” is written by Jordan Sapp, Dave Wyatt, Lauryn Taylor Bach and Carmen Hadley. It is the first taste of their second studio album, and their first as a trio, titled Unite. This was released on Friday, April 15, via Provident Label Group and Sony Music Entertainment.
The track is mostly electronic in its composition, and some of it has the bottomless bass of West Coast hip-hop. Having said that, it has a rocky, power pop feeling to it to get the crowd in the club jumping. Its middle section, if you will, has a verse entailing rapping very much in the style of Kesha, the flow and delivery very evocative.
The video is generally a straight forward affair, though is assisted with some strange visuals that alter colour schemes for a jarring, discombobulating effect. It is daresay, perhaps, shot on one of those ‘green screens’ whereby the basics are shot on a featureless set, and the effects are added postproduction.
“Get Hype” was released on digital retailers on Wednesday, February 10, while the music video was premiered through Vevo on Saturday, April 16.
