Another year, another Emmys, another set of winners and losers. Stephen Colbert helmed the 69th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles last night, which saw records broken and history made, including an incredible feat by Julia Louis-Dreyfus who won her sixth consecutive Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in Best Comedy Series Veep.
Meanwhile, The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Reed Morano became the first woman to receive the award for Best Directing for a Drama Series in 22 Years, and Riz Ahmed the first Muslim man to win an acting Emmy thanks to his leading role in Limited Series The Night Of.
The Handmaid’s Tale came out on top, winning five awards including that for Best Drama Series, making Hulu the first streaming service to win the award, ahead of rivals Netflix and Amazon. Big Little Lies also took five prizes, including wins for Nicole Kidman and Laura Dern (Sorry, Jackie Hoffman).
There was certainly a lot to be celebrated, and Colbert made sure to command the festivities amidst the very political subtext of the night.
