In case you haven’t heard, it’s the Super Bowl this Sunday. Some people care about the game, some care about the food, but it seems everyone cares about the ads. In the US, a 30 second clip now costs upward of $5 million to air during the game, and thus it’s great exposure for a product at a not-so-cheap price.
Fortunately for us outside of the USA who either fail to see the hoopla concerning the halftime advertisements, or enjoy the game but naturally won’t be seeing any $5 million ads at approximately 1:30 AM, the Super Bowl trailer for Ghost In The Shell is already online for our viewing pleasure.
The live action remake of the 1995 anime film of the same name stars Scarlett Johansson as Major Motoko Kusanagi, an automaton programmed to defend a futuristic Japan from a technological threat.
The trailer manages to cram in an absurd amount of action and intrigue in 30 seconds, overflowing with sci-fi weirdness and a calculating voiceover, all backed up by what sounds like a remix of the now infamous Inception ‘thump’, ‘bwong’ or ‘braaam’ – no one seems to know what it’s called, but we sure know how it sounds.
The original film is one of the best loved anime films of all time, so the remake has a whole lot of hype to live up to. Paramount paying for and airing the ad during the Super Bowl will either be looked at as supreme confidence that their film will attract huge audiences, or a desperate, expensive bid to make money on a acclaimed but relatively esoteric project.
Ghost In The Shell is directed by Rupert Sanders, and alongside Johansson stars Juliette Binoche, Michael Pitt, Pilou Asbaek and Takeshi Kitano. The film is released on Friday, March 31.
