David Fincher was at the helm of Netflix’s first original series, House Of Cards, that immediately proved they were for real. Now, he’s back, and very much in his domain: serial killers.
Netflix today released the first trailer for the series Mindhunter, which you can watch below. The series is based on the 1996 book, Mind Hunter: Inside FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, by John Douglas and Mark Olshanker, and takes place in 1979, revolving around two FBI agents who interview serial killers in order to help solve current murders.
Fincher’s hands are all over this project. The trailer immediately feels like a combination of Se7en and Zodiac, and when arguably the best contemporary director is at the helm of a TV series, expectations are bound to be sky high.
Of course, Fincher is a busy man and won’t be directing every episode. Luckily, Netflix has brought on board a host of excellent directors to take charge of the ruthless darkness the series promises: Tobias Lindholm (A Hijacking), Asif Kapadia (Senna) and Andrew Douglas (The Amityville Horror) are all on board.
Fincher will executive produce the show alongside Joshua Donen and Cean Chaffin (Gone Girl) as well as Charlize Theron. The series stars Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallanay, Anna Torv and Hannah Gross.
Mindhunter premieres globally on Netflix in October. Despite the abundance of new releases Netflix have already announced for the coming year, it’s fair to argue this might be the most exciting of the lot. Bring on October.
