The Flash will be a part of DC’s second wave of post-Justice League films where they will be feeling the pressure to have success or fear getting left behind by Marvel. Things weren’t looking good for the film when director Rick Famuyiwa (Dope) stepped down, citing “creative differences” in October 2016. Fortunately, they’ve narrowed their shortlist down to three big name directors to replace him.
Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass), Sam Raimi (Spiderman) and Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Back To The Future) have all met with Warner Bros. in recent weeks and are all reportedly strong contenders for the position.
The film has been on hold ever since Famuyiwa quit, who was actually the second director to leave the project after Seth Grahame-Smith left, despite being set to make his directorial debut.
Warner Bros. has taken advantage of the halt in production and a pushed back release date, letting star Ezra Miller go off and film Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them 2 while they take their time searching for the right director.
Zemeckis is possibly the frontrunner for the job, although he has scheduling issues of his own, as he’s set to shoot an untitled drama with Steve Carell this autumn, though reportedly Warner Bros. are happy to wait for him.
It’s been an arduous process for the film, and considering the standalone Batman film has had its own issues, the DC extended universe is going through the kind of bumps that Marvel don’t seem to have. If the films turn out well though, this tricky pre-production process will be a thing of the past and the future will begin to look a little rosier. And that starts with picking the right director.
Justice League arrives in cinemas Friday, November 17.
