Edgar Wright Considering ‘Baby Driver’ Sequel | Film News

While Edgar Wright has dabbled in spiritual successors with his team ups with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in the famed Cornetto Trilogy, he’s never directed an out-and-out sequel. That may be about to change.

With Baby Driver set to be Wright’s highest grossing film, the writer/director revealed to Empire that Sony has approached him about a possible sequel:

“The studio have asked me to think about writing a sequel and it is one of the ones that I might do a sequel to because I think there’s somewhere more to go with it in terms of the characters. Baby has got to a new place”.

However, Wright later went on to imply that any potential sequel would have to have an entirely new flavour to the first film, as he’s not a fan of sequels simply rehashing their original premise and going back to square one.

It’s an interesting dilemma for Wright, who is likely head over heels at the reception Baby Driver has gotten, and while it’s tempting to go back and attempt to capture that magic all over again, that can sometimes be a recipe for disaster. Would a sequel be able to conjure up another fantastic soundtrack? Would audiences be as immersed in a sequel where the characters aren’t as fresh?

Besides that, with Baby Driver performing so well at the box office, Wright likely will have plenty of power to make practically any film he wants next. Limiting himself to a sequel might be a poor choice at a time when his career is arguably at its highest.

Still, this is hardly a confirmation of a sequel, and whether it does or doesn’t happen, we know Wright’s next film will be something special, whether or not it is in fact Baby Driver 2 or not.

Baby Driver is in cinemas right now.
