2012’s Dredd was surprisingly good, and Karl Urban‘s performance as the titular judge received plenty of praise. With the Judge Dredd: Mega-City One TV series in the works, fans have been clamouring for Urban to reprise his role.
While the series is set to be an ensemble series about a team of judges, possibly meaning Dredd himself may not appear in the show, Urban indicated that not only is he willing to return as Judge Dredd, but that he has had discussions with the producers of the show about returning:
“I am in discussions with them about that. I told them that if they write the material and give Dredd something to do and give him a function, I will be there. I would love to”.
Nothing has been confirmed, and it’s possible Urban could return but in a less frequent role if that is easier to fit into his schedule. While the 2012 film didn’t bring in particularly good box office numbers, the film has become a cult hit and it would be naive of the producers not to consider bringing back Urban for the role he made his own.
The show itself will be set in the future where the east coast of the United States has become riddled with crime amid a huge megalopolis. Producer Jason Kingsley previously mentioned how Alex Garland‘s 2012 film was unable to fit in much exploration of the city, something that the show will hopefully be able to achieve with longer form storytelling.
Hopefully Urban signs on and returns, but either way the show looks to have plenty of potential to explore the nooks and crannies of the world Dredd wasn’t able to. If the show is even half the fun the 2012 film was, it’ll be great.
