She may have fled the grasp of the Scientologists, but Katie Holmes now finds herself in the grip of The Secret. Based on the 2006 series of interviews and Rhonda Byrne‘s book of the same name, the film will follow a woman who abides by the so-called “law of attraction”, to now be played by Katie Holmes. The law claims that our thoughts can directly change the world around us. Holmes buys this instead?
The film will be directed by Andy Tennant (Hitch, 2005, and The Bounty Hunter, 2010) and the adapted screenplay written by Bekah Brunstetter (This Is Us).
As mentioned, the source will only act as inspiration, with the film centering on a hard-working widow with three children. When she hires a handyman to fix her house during a storm, she learns of his philosophy of believing in the power of the universe to deliver what we want. I cringed, too, but at least the plotline has logic.
The original book attracted some controversy, whether it asked for it or not. That said, it only increased sales and the teachings became very well known. 30 million copies were sold worldwide, and whilst there’s nothing wrong with spreading positivity, one should never become complacent.
Holmes, whose credits include Dawson’s Creek and Batman Begins (2005), can next be seen in Steven Soderbergh’s Logan Lucky from August 18. She also has a cameo in the upcoming Ocean’s Eight which debuts on June 8 next year.
The release date for The Secret is currently unknown, with production yet to start. The more you want the film, the sooner it’ll come, so familiarise yourself with the book if you’re desperate to see Holmes and a handyman on screen.
