True Detective is back. After the critically acclaimed first season was followed by the shrug-inducing second season, the show took a bit of a hiatus as series creator Nic Pizzolatto cited burnout from having to rush the whole second season story into production.
Pizzolatto is now teaming up David Milch (Deadwood, Luck) to write the third season of the anthology series, while Academy Award winning actor Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) signed on to star in the summer.
The official greenlight for the third season has now come from HBO, who have announced that Jeremy Saulnier (Green Room, Blue Ruin) will direct alongside Pizzolatto.
If that’s not exciting enough, the official logline for the third season has arrived:
“Season 3 of True Detective will tell the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods. Ali will play the lead role of Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas”.
A mystery playing out in three separate time periods? It certainly sounds like Pizzolatto is heading back to what made the first season such an acclaimed hit. Saulnier is also an extremely good pick to direct, having already honed his craft at the helm of gritty, violent thrillers in his previous two films.
Cary Fukunaga directed the majority of the first season, crafting a fine partnership with Pizzolatto, and one of the reasons season two failed was having a handful of directors attempting to adapt Pizzolatto’s vision for the screen. Hopefully Saulnier can bring the same consistent creative voice to the show that Fukunaga did.
No word yet on how many episodes the season will have, as Pizzolatto is still writing, although he has finished the majority of the season, writing every episode himself apart from episode four alongside Milch. Co-writers were also brought in for season two after Pizzolatto wrote the entire first season, which might be another sign that the show is going back to what made it so good originally.
So, terrifically exciting news for fans, and perhaps even better news for HBO as they can bring back one of their most popular shows just as another – Game Of Thrones – is coming to a close, and may not debut its final season until 2019. If that is the case, True Detective can more than handily fill in and continue the high ratings.
