This is around the time where films that will be major players on the awards circuit early next year have their first trailers released, and based on early festival buzz, Annette Bening is being tipped as having a major chance to be in the running for Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool, whose trailer Lionsgate have just released.
The film is based on Peter Turner‘s memoir, the story of the relationship that developed between legendary actress Gloria Grahame (Bening) and her young lover (Jamie Bell) in the late 1970s. The film also stars Julie Walters and Vanessa Redgrave.
The film is directed by Paul McGuigan (Lucky Number Slevin), and certainly looks to be the kind of the film – films about Hollywood and/or it’s stars – the academy especially is wont to fawn over. Bening is always tremendous in any role she plays, so her potential nominations might be riding on how good the film around her is.
McGuigan is an experienced but not particularly memorable filmmaker, having moved into TV recently and directed episodes for shows such as Marvel’s Luke Cage and Sherlock. Hopefully he brings the best out of a great cast and the film can live up to it’s enigmatic title.
Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool arrives in UK cinemas Friday, November 17.
