You’re never too old for Disney. Dame Judi Dench continues to defy age expectations and her own battle with vision degeneration by joining yet another project; Dench is in talks to star in Disney’s adaptation of popular fantasy book series Artemis Fowl, directed by all around talent Kenneth Branagh.
Written by Eoin Colfer, the books focus on teenage criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl II, whose bold and daring adventures land him in constant peril. The book series sees Fowl become an antihero who, despite his criminal disposition, collaborates with the fantastical creatures and fairies around him to stop the larger forces at hand.
Irish playwright Conor McPherson will adapt the first two books of the series into a screenplay while Harvey Weinstein and Branagh produce, with Judy Hofflund playing executive.
The project has been in development from as far back as 2001. Since then, several changes have been made tp the creative team, though the current squad, including Branagh as director, was announced back in 2015.
Dench and Branagh recently collaborated on huge ensemble film Murder on the Orient Express, for which Branagh also served as director. They also starred in the West End’s The Winter’s Tale back in 2015. Dame Judi Dench’s latest role is as Queen Victoria in dramedy Victoria and Abdul, which premiered in theatres just last week.
Artemis Fowl is dated for an August 9, 2019 release.
