After its shocking (but not so shocking) cancellation by Netflix back in June, production on the Sense8 Special has finally begun. The 2 hour series finale was granted after fans endlessly protested about the surprise end to the series. Co-creator Lana Wachowski maintained her own faith in the project and announced the brief renewal just weeks after.
Miguel Angel Silvestre, who plays closeted actor Lito on the show, took to Instagram to celebrate what looked to be a table reading. A picture of his script, it showed the special to have been written by Wachowski and Season 2 contributors Cloud Atlas author David Mitchell, and novelist Aleksandar Hemon.
Season 2 saw a full release in May; it did, however, end on a major cliffhanger which does make me somewhat sympathetic to those committed to the show. The finale will provide closure, as well as another short platform to showcase the show’s admirable inclusion of diverse, and particularly LGBT+ figures.
The reasoning behind the cancellation wasn’t too hard to wrap your head around; chief content officer at Netflix, Ted Sarandos, cited the high cost to low viewership as the kryptonite, understandably when the show was filmed in 13 countries for the first 23 episodes, reportedly costing $9 million each. Unfortunately, for some, the show was priceless and there was no choice but to beg for a renewal.
Netflix will release the Sense8 two-hour series finale special in 2018.
