‘Charlie’s Angel’ Reboot Eyeing Kristen Stewart And Lupita Nyong’o | Film News

A reboot? Déjà vu. Fortunately, a Charlie’s Angels reboot that Hollywood might need. First, it was a ’70s TV series starring Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett-Majors, and Jaclyn Smith in the leading roles, then came the noughties films with Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu, followed by the useless 2011 TV series that was cancelled after 4 episodes. Now, it looks like we’ve got something with promise.

The upcoming remake, under Elizabeth Banks‘ direction, is currently eyeing César Award
winner Kristen Stewart and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o so it looks like the project will be of some quality. Doug Miro and Carlos Bernard (Narcos) are thought to be rewriting the script, and there’s a tiny chance Janelle Monae might also be on the cards.

Kristen Stewart has managed to evade her Twilight reputation, earning a name for herself in the world of independent movies; Clouds of Sils Maria, Still Alice, and Café Society proved her talents to critics. Charlie’s Angels would be Stewart’s first major franchise, tentpole film in five years.

Lupita Noyong’o, meanwhile, holds a much more limited resume than Stewart, but nonetheless has made a huge name for herself. She was awarded the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for 12 Years A Slave, her debut performance in a feature film. Nyong’o voices Maz Kanata in the Star Wars franchise, and will appear in the upcoming The Last Jedi.

If this casting goes ahead, the leads look to be of applaudable diversity. With Lupita’s Kenyan heritage and Mexican background, and Kristen’s androgynous look and LGBT+ being, the film will have the wide representation everyone (most people) have been asking Hollywood for.

While I do tend to hate on reboots and remakes, a group of badass women fighting crime is a story that needs to be told to each generation of women, and a wider representation of women will do a lot to inspire.

Banks’ Charlie’s Angels is slated for a 2019 release.
