Gillian Anderson Reveals She Is Likely Stepping Away From ‘The X-Files’ After Season 11 | TV News

While the trailer for season eleven of The X-Files debuted at New York Comic Con on Sunday to much fanfare, Gillian Anderson revealed that it’s very likely this is the final season we will see her as Dana Scully. At a round table following the show’s presentation at NYCC, Anderson was asked if she’s opening to continuing the role after this season:

“No, no, I think this will be it for me” she stated, before being asked why she returned for this season: “it felt like it wasn’t over. It didn’t feel like we necessarily deliver everything the fans were expecting of us last time, and so it was that”.

While the trailer debuted at NYCC and has now gone online, production on the season is only midway through which allowed the cast to tease some details such as William, Mulder and Scully’s son, playing a larger role in the mythology and former Lone Gunmen member Langley returning.

The big news from Anderson will dominate the headlines, though it’s not exactly a surprise that a role she’s inhabited for so long has probably closing in on its expiration date, much like the show itself. Many fans rumoured that the introduction of Lauren Ambrose and Robbie Amell as Agents Einstein and Miller in the previous season was a ploy to continue the show with a new cast and new agents.

That looks increasingly likely now, although when David Duchovny stepped away from the show during its original run, the series continued with Scully being flanked by Robert Patrick as Agent Doggett, so it’s possible something similar could happen this time around, though unlikely.

What is likely, is that this is probably the final time we’ll see Mulder and Scully together on screen, so enjoy it while it lasts. The X-Files returns in 2018.
