David O. Russell‘s much-hyped, very pricey series picked up by Amazon and set to star Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore is no more. The untitled show was to be produced by The Weinstein Company but in light of the recent allegations of Harvey Weinstein, in conjunction with the suspension of Amazon Studios head Ray Price over similar allegations, Amazon have decided to not move forward with the show.
The series has been totally scrapped, so no other network can pick it up either. In a joint statement from Russell, De Niro and Moore, they said:
“We support Amazon’s decision as in light of recent news and out of respect for all those affected we have decided together that it is best to not move forward with this show”.
The series would have been the first foray into TV for the Oscar-nominated director and came with plenty of hype when it was first announced in November 2016. However, the show had not yet entered production and was reportedly going to cost around $160 million for two seasons, and Amazon had already spent $40 million with only a few scripts to show for it.
While Russell’s series is no more, another Weinstein Company-produced show has gotten new life. The Romanoffs, helmed by Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner, will now totally cut ties with The Weinstein Company and will be produced entirely by Amazon.
Production is already under way for this one, costing a reported $75 million and with four episodes already shot. Weiner expects Weinstein’s name to be totally removed from the show.
Cancellations of television shows pale in comparison to the horrific pain of the victims, but it shows how quickly the ramifications are affecting The Weinstein Company.
