Paul Thomas Anderon‘s mysterious upcoming film, now definitively titled Phantom Thread, has been clouded in mystery since heading into filming, and became even more enticing when star Daniel Day-Lewis announced his retirement from acting, making this role his final one. After vague stabs at plot ideas, we finally have a synopsis for the film.
We thought the film would simply be about a famed dressmaker in 1950s London, but the synopsis below confirms its as much a love story between Day-Lewis’ character and Vicky Krieps‘ as it is a film about the creative process.
“Set in the glamour of 1950s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock.
Women come and go through Woodcock’s life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love.
With his latest film, Paul Thomas Anderson paints an illuminating portrait both of an artist on a creative journey, and the women who keep his world running”.
Anderson, along with a handful of other directors, is in the conversation as arguably the greatest contemporary American director, so naturally any new film of his is met with huge excitement. While the synopsis above doesn’t stand out too much, Anderson’s films have always been about aesthetics and visuals as opposed to a tight, cohesive plot.
So although we now have some added information, no one really knows anything about an Anderson film until it’s in front of them, hitting them in the face. Hold on to your hats, and any other piece of fashionable clothing you own.
Phantom Thread will come with large expectations when it is released Monday, December 25.
