Baby Driver turned out to be one of the surprise hits of the year, making $226 million worldwide. As with any hit movie, attention swiftly shifted to the idea of a sequel. Director Edgar Wright has now confirmed that the gears are in motion for a follow-up.
Wright told Entertainment Weekly: “Those talks are already in the works. The deal is being hammered out as we speak. So, hopefully, I’m going to at least write a second one. I’ve definitely got lots of ideas. Whether it’s the next movie, I don’t know. I’m just working that out at the moment, actually”.
Wright has never made a sequel before, though he has created a thematic trilogy with his beloved trifecta of Cornetto movies; Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End. What doesn’t seem likely is a Baby Driver sequel being Wright’s next film, as he went on to add:
“I have a couple of things that I’ve been developing, and also a couple of new ideas that I had, and all the nice things that I’ve been offered since [the release of Baby Driver].
I would like to get back in the saddle very shortly, because — slightly beyond my control — but there were four years between The World’s End and Baby Driver. I don’t want it to be that long again. I would love to have a film out in the next two years”.
This is arguably the highest point of Wright’s career, as he’s coming off his highest-grossing and best reviewed film, so he should get the chance to pick and choose his next project.
Considering that Baby Driver took a while to write, it wouldn’t surprise anyone to see Wright take on another, smaller film – something he could get finished and released within that two year window – before coming back to write the Baby Driver sequel. Either way, it’s a great time to be Wright, and an equally great time to be a fan of his.
