Stephen Dorff Joins ‘True Detective’ Season Three In Co-Lead Role | TV News

Despite the disappointment of season two of True Detective, which led to fans wondering if HBO would even commission a third season, the show has been a ratings darling so a third season was always likely. The cast for that third season has been coming together very well, leading fans to hope for something closer to the critically acclaimed first season.

In addition to the previously cast Mahershala Ali and Carmen Ejogo, the third season of the show has now added Stephen Dorff to the cast in a co-lead role. Dorff will play an Arkansas State Investigator whose career has been influenced by a baffling crime that has been affecting the community for over three decades, of which the show will focus around.

Ali will play Wayne Hays, a state police detective from North Arkansas, while Ejogo completes the puzzle as a schoolteacher with a connection to two children who went missing in the 1980s. Creator Nic Pizzolatto is back as showrunner and has written every episode of the season, barring episode 4, which he co-wrote with David Milch (Deadwood).

Pizzolatto will also direct some of the episodes in the season alongside Jeremy Saulnier (Green Room, Blue Ruin), who was chosen as the principle director for season three. These decisions bring the show back in line with how season one was produced, which Cary Fukunaga directed the entirety of, and that turned into one of the most critically acclaimed seasons on TV this decade.

All of these good casting and directing decisions involving the third season are helping wash the bad taste of season two out of the mouths of fans, and it’s fair to be excited about True Detective once again. Despite all this movement, there’s not yet word on a premiere date, but very late 2018, or more likely early 2019 is a fair estimation to expect the first episode to arrive.
