Sony‘s live-action Barbie film starring Anne Hathaway has been handed a significant change to its release date. Originally scheduled for an August 8, 2018 release, the film has now been pushed back almost two years to May 8, 2020.
The reasons are currently unclear for the delay, as Hathaway is still reportedly in line to lead the film after taking over from former star Amy Schumer, who left the project last March citing scheduling conflicts.
Alethea Jones is still directing the film, which is said to be in the vein of Enchanted and Big, with the main character being kicked out of Barbieland for not being deemed perfect enough, and winding up on a real-world adventure.
A potential issue might be the script, which currently has an inordinate amount of writers attached to it; Lindsey Beer, Jenny Bicks, Kim Caramele, Diablo Cody, Bert V. Royal, Hilary Winston and Schumer have all worked on it at some point. The old “too many cooks” adage comes to mind, and one wonders if the constant tinkering with the script has left it a bit of a mess.
That is just speculation at this point. It’s also worth noting that there’s never actually been an official announcement regarding Hathaway signing on to star in the film, it has just been assumed ever since she was revealed to be in talks all the way back last summer, and that was the last we heard.
Sony and Mattel initiated the original idea for the film back in 2014, so progress has undoubtedly been slow. It has now got even slower thanks to the pushed back release date, and it’ll be interesting to see where the development of the film goes from here.
