A Men In Black reboot is happening – sans Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones – because Hollywood will soon be filled with reboots of old films, apparently. Sony and Amblin Entertainment have decided to move forward with a straight reboot of the sci-fi comedy franchise with brand new actors, and they look to have found their director for the project.
F. Gary Gray (The Fate Of The Furious, Straight Outta Compton) is reportedly in talks to direct the reboot, which will relaunch the franchise. There had been discussions about rebooting the franchise as a crossover with 21 Jump Street, and James Bobin (Alice Through The Looking Glass) was in line to direct that film, before Sony decided to just do a straight reboot instead.
The film will reportedly be in the same vein of Jurassic World; a reboot with brand new characters, but one that still takes place in the same universe as the original films, so sort of a sequel as well.
Gray has been consistently been churning out hits since 1995’s comedy, Friday, and he’s twice nabbed the record for best opening by a film helmed by a black director. It will be interesting to see with this reboot whether the character dynamics remain the same.
Matt Holloway and Art Marcum (Transformers: The Last Knight) have written the most recent draft of the script, and Sony has already set a release date of May 17, 2019 for the film. With Gray likely on board, the next step will be casting, and it will be interesting to see who’s in line to lead this latest reboot being churned out.
