Alicia Vikander will be leading a thrilling adventure in the form of Tomb Raider come March, and she’s now signed on to play the lead in another thriller. The Academy Award winner has signed on to star in an adaptation of the bestselling thriller written by Karen Dionne, The Marsh King’s Daughter.
Vikander will play Helena Petterier, who ostensibly leads a perfect life but secretly houses a dark past: her mother was kidnapped as a teenager and Helena was the product of a relationship between captive and tormentor. After living 12 years in a life controlled by her kidnapper father, he is caught and sent to prison, but an escape forces Helena to confront her secret history.
The script has been written by Elle Smith and The Revenant writer Mark L. Smith, and the film will be directed by Morton Tyldum (The Imitation Game, Passengers). The film has been described as being in the vein of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl, which is promising, but the same comparison was made for 2016’s The Girl On The Train, and look how that turned out.
Vikander is on the precipice of turning into a full blown movie star with an Oscar already under her belt and with Tomb Raider having the potential to be a huge hit.
The Marsh King’s Daughter has excellent source material and has the potential to be another star-making role, but we’ll have to wait and see if a director like Tyldum, one who has played it relatively safe in his career so far, can raise the material to the sort of David Fincher-levels producers are obviously hoping for.
