With Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom set to arrive in cinemas in June, Universal is already looking ahead to the third instalment in the revamped franchise. Jurassic World 3 is already in the works and even has a scheduled release date of June 11, 2021.
Colin Trevorrow, writer/director of Jurassic World and co-writer/executive producer of this year’s sequel, will again have a major hand in the script of the third film, though this time he’ll be co-writing with Emily Carmichael (Pacific Rim Uprising).
The writers will reportedly pick up right where this year’s sequel leaves audiences in the summer, though don’t expect any plot details any time soon. Trevorrow said of the addition of Carmichael:
“It’s important to this franchise that we welcome new creative voices to keep our storytelling fresh and alive. I’m thrilled with the tension and beauty J.A. has brought to Fallen Kingdom, and I know Emily will add another layer of emotion to the concluding chapter of our trilogy”.
While it might seem early for Universal to get working on a third film considering the second is still months away, the first film in the revamped trilogy back in 2015 blew away the box office with one of the biggest openings ever before going on to reel in over $1 billion worldwide.
While the sequel might not be expected to do quite that well, it would be surprising to see Fallen Kingdom do anything but big numbers. And Universal seems to think so as well, as moving ahead with the third film this early shows a heap of confidence in the sequel.
Directed by J.A. Bayona, and starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom opens Friday, June 22.
