Amazon continues to wheel and deal. Having signed off on two series within the last week – The Peripheral from Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, and Utopia from Gone Girl author/screenwriter Gillian Flynn – they have now picked up the rights to a third.
The show is a eight-part series from the creators of the 2014 hit Gomorrah, titled Zero Zero Zero. Andrea Riseborough, Dane DeHaan and Gabriel Byrne have all signed on to star in the project, which has already begun production.
The show will revolve around a power struggle within the cocaine trade by following a shipment of the drug from the Americas to Europe. Mexican cartels, the Calabrian mafia and corrupt businessmen from all over each battle each other for power over the coke.
The show will be adapted from Roberto Saviano‘s book of the same name, and will be directed by Pablo Trapero, Janus Metz and Stefano Sollima, the latter of which is helming another drug-related project, Sicario: Day Of The Soldado, which will be released on Friday, June 29.
Sollima said about the show: “We are going to do it by following a container ship and its load from its point of departure in Mexico to its final destination in Calabria, describing how the international trafficking of this special ‘commodity’ is affecting the market, the world economy and even our lives. This special good is cocaine, and its journey is our own”.
Amazon have only picked up the US rights for the series, as well as Canada, Latin America and Spain. StudioCanal is selling the series internationally.
