With the MCU set to move into a new era after the fallout of Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel are looking to move ahead with a solo film they probably should have commissioned way back in Phase 1. The studio is reportedly finally planning a Black Widow movie, and thankfully they’ve been meeting with a number of female directors to discuss helming the project.
Reportedly the studio has met with Deniz Gamze Erguven (the Turkish movie Mustang), Chloe Zhao (The Rider) and Amma Asante (A United Kingdom), as well as other unnamed filmmakers.
A tweet following up on the report THR suggested that two other names in the mix were Maggie Betts (Novitiate) and Angela Robinson (Professor Marston and the Wonder Women).
This comes after the report suggested that hiring female directors has become an actionable priority for studios in recent months, especially giving women the chance to helm franchise projects. It’s long overdue, but obviously this is tremendous news, and comes just as S.J. Clarkson signed on to became the first woman to direct a Star Trek movie.
Scarlett Johansson would presumably star in this standalone Black Widow outing, though with the major shakeup happening at the MCU right now, who knows? Anything is possible. It would seem like a strange move for her to step away with the solo film finally happening, but we’ll wait and see.
Marvel seem to be doing their due diligence to find the right fit for the film. Perhaps they’re looking for a blow away presentation from one of the filmmakers, much like the one Cathy Yan reportedly gave Warner Bros. that landed her the Birds Of Prey gig. Whoever signs on to direct, it will be a great opportunity and fans will be excited to finally get the solo Black Widow film they’ve been pining for.
