The Internet have been pretty silent for a while. Since their astonishing 2015 album Ego Death, we haven’t heard much from the collective. Yet, we did see the rise of frontwoman Syd‘s solo career with the release of her debut studio album Fin, to widespread acclaim. But after a few years to work on other ventures, the collective promised us new music this New Music Friday and they have fulfilled their promise.
Today, The Internet release their brand new single and music video for “Roll (Burbank Funk)” and it’s definitely worth the wait. It’s an intensely groovy new track and it gives off 70’s nostalgia vibes which you can instantly resonate with, even if you’re not a 70’s baby. Disco claps and rattles serve as the foundation but its inevitably carried by the funky basslines and keys as Syd’s vocals take a backseat for Steve Lacy‘s.
The video serves as the icing on the cake. Everything about the video screams 70’s, from the outfits and the dance moves to even the videography. The Joe Weil-directed clip also features blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameos from Dev Hynes, Tyler, the Creator, Mac DeMarco, Thundercat, Kamasi Washington and more.
