Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to the 1986 original set to bring back Tom Cruise, has just added some serious star power to its cast. Per Deadline, Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Ed Harris (Westworld) have officially signed on to the sequel.
Unfortunately, there’s no word on their roles in the film yet, but their additions make this a pretty stacked cast. Along with Cruise, the film will also feature Miles Teller, Val Kilmer, Jennifer Connelly, and Glen Powell. The film will revolve around the son of Maverick’s former partner Goose entering the picture, with Maverick taking him under his wing now that he’s an instructor at the Top Gun school.
The script has been written by Peter Craig (The Town), Justin Marks (The Jungle Book), and Eric Warren Singer (American Hustle), and will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, who previously collaborated with Cruise on the 2013 sci-fi action-thriller, Oblivion.
80s nostalgia is still going strong, although the accelerated pop culture cycle nowadays means that there’s also 90s and even early-2000s nostalgia permeating media. Top Gun: Maverick has naturally been commissioned the back of that pining for the past, but will it be any good?
The cast is clearly stacked, but Kosinski has yet to truly prove himself as a director, and the three writers attached to the script have all had varying degrees of success. Fans of the original film will be crossing their fingers in hope of a sequel that justifies its existence.
We will all find out if Maverick was worth making when it hits cinemas on July 12, 2019.
