The latest project Netflix has ordered is an animated World War II drama titled The Liberator, which will tell the riveting true story of the bloodiest march to victory of the Second World War.
Based on the book The Liberator: One World War II Soldier’s 500-Day Odyssey by Alex Kershaw, the story follows the battlefield odyssey of maverick U.S. Army officer Felix Sparks and his infantry unit, as they fight for over 500 days in an attempt to liberate Europe. The series is created by Jeb Stuart (Die Hard and The Fugitive).
The series will be in four parts, and will be the first ever produced in Trioscope Enhanced Hybrid Animation, a new patent-pending technology combining state of the art CGI with live-action performance, which brings “an unprecedented level of emotion and fidelity to the animated drama experience”.
Grzegorz Jonkajtys (Sin City, Pan’s Labyrinth) helped develop the technology with L.C. Crowley. Jonkajtys will also direct all four episodes.
Netflix continues to look to all avenues for their content. They consistently span multiple genres in both film and TV in order to cater to as many demographics as possible, no matter how niche. The Liberator is a fascinating next step, combining the anarchy of World War II with trailblazing new animation technology.
We’ll have to wait and see whether the show is able to reach its huge potential, but this sounds like another smart investment by the streaming giant. If the technology is indeed as good as it promises, everyone could be heading to Netflix for a chance to see the next step in animation.
